Implementing a Metadata Strategy

The Presenters:

Sid Adelman is a principal in Sid Adelman & Associates, an organization specializing in planning and implementing data warehouses, in data warehouse and BI assessments, and in establishing effective strategies. He is a regular speaker at The Data Warehouse Institute and IBM’s DB2 and Data Warehouse Conference. Sid chairs the “Ask the Experts” column on www.dmreview.com.

He is a frequent contributor to journals that focus on data warehouse. He co-authored Data Warehouse Project Management with Larissa Moss. He is the principal author on Impossible Data Warehouse Situations with Solutions from the Experts and his new book, Data Strategy, was published in 2005. He is a frequent speaker at DAMA International. He can be reached at 818 783 9634 and sidadelman@aol.com. His web site is www.sidadelman.com.

Today, if most IT Directors are asked about the assets under their control (a primary asset being data), most would be forced to respond that the inventory of data is incomplete or nonexistent, little is known about the quality of data, and "there is no defined strategy for the productive use of this asset."  This presentation is about developing a Data Strategy.

In this interactive session, you will complete an assessment of your organization’s Data Strategy. The session also includes a presentation that discusses the underlying framework and the key components of a Data Strategy which are necessary for a successful Data Warehouse implementation including:

Michael Gorman, involved in data processing, database and DBMS for 40 years has been secretary of the ANSI Database Standards committee secretary for over 27 years, and helped develop SQL standards. Gorman worked for the System Development Corporation which in conjunction with MITRE and Lincoln Labs invented data management.

Gorman has published articles for IDC, Auerbach, Computer World, ACM, Q.E.D. Information Sciences and John Wiley and Sons. He has presented to DAMA chapters and its National conference for a number of years.

Through Whitemarsh Information Systems Corporation, Gorman provides consulting services, books, courses, workshops, training, and methodologies for information resources planning and management, and a full range of specialized data management architecture and database design services.

Data modeling projects with small or restricted scope almost always succeed. However, when collections of data models from small or restricted scope projects are brought together the result is "less than successful." And even when successful, these enterprise-wide integrated data models seldom map onto the existing hundreds to thousands of legacy systems and databases. What to do? How do you achieve data interoperability across the enterprise? This presentation consists of two parts.

Part 1: The Problem

The determination that these are the "big 5" problem areas resulted from an in depth study of large-scale data standardization efforts over a 15 year period.

Part II: The Solution

Having clearly identified the problem, the presentation puts forward a solution, which too has been tried with success over the past several years. The parts to the solution are:

If time permits in the presentation, a metadata repository is employed to show how the repository is valued and the benefits of enterprise-wide data sharing are achieved.

Metadata is a critical component of business, as it is the information about the data stored in an organization's systems.  If a company is attempting to use data effectively, it must fully understand the metadata that supports that data.  This requires a strategy for metadata - a strategy most organizations do not currently have.

This presentation will offer a methodology for creating and implementing a metadata strategy, based upon actual experiences of the presenter at several companies.  The attendee will gain an understanding of the importance of metadata, the various types of metadata, metadata's role in the data-information-knowledge continuum, and a plan for instituting a metadata strategy within their organization.

In this presentation you will learn:

·         The foundation of sharing data assets across the entire organization

·         How to develop recognition of the value of data and its components

·         How to develop a map for managing expanding information requirements

·         The importance of central data administration to an organization

·         A method for addressing data quality, data integrity, data reuse

·         How to measure the value of information

·         An overview of Information Stewardship and the business/IS relationship
