Data Modeling with UML

The Presentations and Presenters:

Due to the single-system-at-a-time development approach that most of us have experienced over the years, the development of reusable data structures that can be reused over and over again is not intuitive. Most people would agree that if a set of proven, reusable data structures were available that we could reuse in most of our data warehouse and even transaction processing designs, it would be a benefit to our organizations.

This presentation is an overview of reusable data structure patterns that will be valuable assets in your data warehouse and other projects. Topics covered include:

  1. What is a data structure pattern?
  2. What types of patterns do almost all applications call for?
  3. Examples of commonly used data structure patterns

How these patterns reduce complexity and reduce cost.

Joe Oates is a speaker, author, thought-leader and consultant on data warehousing, database design and object-oriented (OO) development. He has more than 30 years experience in the successful management and technical development of business, real-time, OO and data warehouse applications for industry and government clients. Joe is the Chief Architect for Sybase BI Division and is the primary designer of the Sybase Industry Warehouse Studio data warehouse product. His successful data warehouses include the following industries: banking, health care, credit card, telephone, distribution and life insurance. Mr. Oates is a former Big 8 consultant and manager and holds an MBA, an MA, and a BS. He is featured each month on DMReview.com "Ask the Experts". He has published several articles on various BI subjects. He speaks all over the world on Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence. He is a former member of the ANSI X3H4 Repository Committee and a former officer of DAMA-NCR and the International Board of the Data Administration Management Association. He is also a Certified Government Information Factory Architect.

Finally database modelers can now reap the same rewards from using the Unified Modeling Language as application developers have been doing for years. Application and database modelers can now speak one language - UML. No longer are database analysts, modelers, and designers relegated to the tail end of the development lifecycle. Now database designers can participate from the inception of the project, helping shape those early decisions that often have a critical impact on the system’s data. Also, being able to link together the object and data models, and thereby improving the understanding of both, helps yield higher quality systems.
